Temperature Map of the Merging Cluster Abell 2255
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a spatially resolved map of intracluster gas temperatures in the rich cluster Abell 2255, using ROSAT PSPC data. The intracluster gas is strongly non-isothermal and the temperature distribution supports the conclusions of Burns et al. (1995) that Abell 2255 is currently undergoing a merger. The hottest regions are near the core, northwest of the center. A map of the ratio of softer to harder X-ray photons reveals an anomalously soft region northeast of the center, coincident with a radio ridge discovered by Burns et al (1995). We suggest that this cooler region is associated with an infalling group of galaxies which is giving rise to the radio ridge. Meanwhile, a much more substantial recent merger between comparably sized subcluster components can account for the more global merger signatures, which include the extensive central radio halo, the large scale gas temperature variations, the pair of central dominant ellipticals, elliptical X-ray isophotes offset from these dominant galaxies, and the very high velocity dispersion of galaxies in the cluster.

متن کاملThe radio and X - ray properties of Abell 2255
New radio and X-ray data are reported for the rich cluster Abell 2255. The cluster radio emission is characterized by the presence of a diffuse halo source, located at the cluster center, and a more peripheral ridge of radio emission which could be a relic. In addition, 6 tailed radio sources and a small double are found to be associated with cluster galaxies. At X-ray wavelengths, the cluster ...
متن کاملAbell 2255: Increased Star Formation and AGN Activity in a Cluster-Cluster Merger
Deep VLA 1.4 GHz radio continuum imaging of Abell 2255 is presented. This cluster is among the better nearby candidates for rich cluster-cluster merger systems, with evidence including an elongated X-ray morphology, the presence of a radio halo, and substructure present in its galaxy distribution. Our radio observations reach an rms sensitivity of ∼ 40μJy beam, enabling us to detect (at 5σ) sta...
متن کاملJa n 20 05 The merging cluster Abell 85 caught between meals by XMM - Newton Florence
Our XMM-Newton observations of Abell 85 confirm the extended 4 Mpc filament first detected with ROSAT, which has an X-ray temperature of about ∼ 2 keV and is probably made of groups falling on to the cluster. A comparison of the temperature map with numerical simulations show that Abell 85 had intense merging activity in the past and is not fully relaxed, even in the central region. Finally, a ...
متن کاملA BeppoSAX Observation of the Merging Cluster Abell 3266.
We present results from a BeppoSAX observation of the rich cluster Abell 3266. The broadband spectrum (2-50 keV) of the cluster, when fitted with an optically thin thermal emission model, yields a temperature of 8.1+/-0.2 keV and a metal abundance of 0.17+/-0.02 in solar units, with no evidence of a hard X-ray excess in the Phoswich Detector System spectrum. By performing a spatially resolved s...
